The Hound of the Baskervilles

Chapter 1 – Mr Sherlock Holmes

The chapter introduces Holmes, his character and his cleverness which is contrastively enhanced by the other character, Watson. Conan Doyle remarks Holmes’s intelligence through Watson’s mistakes. Holmes himself says that often, correcting Watson’s mistakes, he has found the way to the truth.

Why does Conan Doyle need to emphasize so much Holmes’s skills?

Watson, however, is the first person narrator of the story, so he is not a complete idiot! Nevertheless, he seems a dwarf compared to Holmes.
